1. Stand Back and evaluate each use of Electricity.
The best advice to save electricity consumption is to work out which aplliance uses the most and consider how essential it is. Often we use items out of habit, but, it is worth making an impartial evaluation of whether it is necessary to use.
2. Choose temperature carefully.
The biggest savings can be made by turning down the air conditioner and heating. Rather than have the heating on full blast, wear an extra layer of clothing in winter. Get used to the heat in the summer.
3. Timing.
Many people leave the heating and air conditioner on when they are not in the house. This is quite wasteful as most of the heat evaporates. Invest in a good timer and don’t forget to override it when you go away. Heating can be turned on before you need it, but, can probably be turned off before you no longer need the heat.
4. Boil the Minimum
When boiling the kettle or a pan of water, don’t just fill the kettle to the top; fill it for as much as you need. It will be quicker to boil and save significant amounts of money.
5. Insulation
Insulating the loft is one of the best ways to get an immediate return on saving energy bills. Don’t just insulate the loft. Look into cavity wall insulation, an initial outlay can provide long termĀ benefits. Look at other things which are worth insulating - like a kettle in between boiling.
6. Don’t Overcook.
If it takes 3 minutes to boil cabbage, don’t have the pan boiling for 15 minutes.
7. Turn off TV
Leaving the TV on standby consumes a surprising amount of electricity, especially it is all night. Many people think that when they press the remote button it really is off. This applies to many other appliances as well. For example, mobile phone charges, computer screens e.t.c
8. Choose Low Energy Lightbulbs.
The lightbulbs using 20% of the energy of a standard life bulb. They are also coming down in price, subsidised by some governments. The only disadvantages is you may need to buy bigger lampshades.
9. Review Suppliers
Review Your energy suppliers at least once a year. Even if you have switched your electricity supplier once, the cheapest quote may soon change. Therefore, check online to find the lowest cost supplier. The effort to change is usually worth the monthly savings.
10. Fill in Draughts
Alot of heat can escape through draughts. Make sure any gaps are filled in with extra insulation.
